Writing our thoughts can be very beneficial. This writer recalls taking copious notes in class and never looking at them again. Did well in subjects where this was done. Not so well in subjects without many notes. Writing ideas and information down does improve memory recall.
There are however other benefits.
The regular recording of dreams or streams of consciousness upon waking may prove useful, especially in learning more about self, particularly soul self. It is good to remember but if we don't, it may be nearly as good to record the thoughts we have upon awakening. We can periodically review them to watch for trends and clues.
The act of recording our thoughts brings them to our attention. Noting observations through out the day may also benefit us. We may find we answer our own questions. Sometimes before we ask them.
It is good to write down what we wish to see in our life. We can write using the most positive words and expressions. Then reread such thoughts on a regular basis and watch how changes occur.
It is important to express ourselves positively. We are programming our life. If there is an area that is not quite as we wish it, we can change it.
Be aware of the meaning of words. "Want" for example, means "lack." When we say "I want" we are saying we are without. As long as we use "want" we do not have whatever we are speaking about (even if we do, it won’t be for long.).
It is just as easy to say "I wish." This confirms the desire, but it is still not there. Better to say "I see myself having [or doing]" whatever is desired.
Suppose we wish to have a new(er) vehicle. We can say "I see myself driving a ________ [describe the car in positive terms: make, model, color, condition, financial terms, (e.g. affordable payments), etc., including any special circumstances]. Review regularly and wait.
When her black 1997 Honda Civic automatic was stolen in 2008, this writer decided she wished to drive a green Honda with standard shift, affordable, and in 100% working condition. She quickly found a 2000 green Honda Civic with a clutch for the same price as the stolen car. The insurance company reimbursed her full value for the 1997 car including the sales tax.
This method can be used to reprogram anything in our life. The more we believe it, the better it works. [Placebo effect.]
Using our imagination is how our mind builds our reality. Writing it down reinforces the program, making it more concrete.
